So you want a particular sound, or a particular texture, or you want an entire music score from your favorite computer game, right? But alas, the files you want are stored in some file who's format you don't even recognize. This is where Game Extractor comes in.
Game Extractor has support for reading and extracting the data archives for almost any game you can think of...just check the website.
I personally have used it for Command and Conquer: Generals, Command and Conquer: Generals Zero Hour, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War Winter Assualt, and a few others I can't recall.
It works great. Just click open, and locate the file you wish to open. If it supports it, you will get a file list of all the files inside the archive. You can highlight more than one file and choose to extract them. It is great.
There are some issues with this program though:
1) the interface is java. While this may not be a big deal for some, it obviously will require the Java SDK installed locally. And it might require more CPU/RAM resources than you are willing to sacrifice.
2) the extraction has no progress meter. If you choose to extract more than one file, the program window will just completely freeze and you can't do anything in it until the extraction process is completed.
3) This isn't like your favorite zip program showing the contents of the archive in a Windows Explorer sort of way. All you see are the contents as a list of their location:
i.e.:
/data/music/music01.ogg
/data/music/music02.ogg
/data/sounds/sound01.ogg
/data/sounds/sound01.ogg
/data/textures/texture01.tex
/data/textures/texture02.tex
For users like me, whlie I would prefer a more windows explorer-like interface, I don't mind dealing with this method. But for less experienced users, this may not be the most "preferred" interface of the user and might have trouble dealing with it.
The only other problem I had was game specific. I extracted the FDA music files from Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War in order to convert them to AIFC and eventually WAV then MP3. However the extracted files didn't have the proper data for some reason, as if the extraction process isn't "proper". I used a specialized tool to extract these same data files and they had no issues. It was very weird, but it was like Game Extractor was handling these files wrong. Oh well.
Its a very good program for all your gamers wanting files from the data archives in the game install directory.
Interestingly the information page lists XBOX and PS2 games...indicating it can read data files off those disc images as well...quite interesting. I dont have an XBOX or PS2 to validate those claims, though. |

Previews can be saved in a variety of formats - the conversion done by Game Extractor.
In addition to the basic functions, Game Extractor provides many convenient functions such as renaming and replacing files, searching for files, and customisation of the interface. Buttons can be added and removed from the toolbar, and both error and message alerts can be suppressed so they never bother you again. Game Extractor also has an autorun program to make it easy for Windows users to run Game Extractor.
